Cogeneration Plant ROSEN - Rosignano Energia
Rosignano Solvay (LI) - Italia

Cogeneration Plant: ROSEN plant.

The Solvay chemical plant in Rosignano produces carbonate and bicarbonate of sodium, polyethylene, chlorine and its derivations, caustic sodium, hydrogen peroxide and percarbonate.

The fabrication of these products asks for lots of energy, be it electrical and thermic. Until half way through 1990 Solvay used to produce thermic energy with conventional plants.

At the purpose of increasing the rendering energy, to reduce to the minimum the atmospheric emissions and the costs of production, Electrabel has invested more than 500 billion Lira in a new cogeneration plant, on the basis of an industrial agreement signed with Solvay. Rosen S.p.A. came about in this way.

The energetic efficiency of this new cogeneration plant is higher than that of the old thermic units. Also the emissions are reduced, thanks to the use of fuel at a low environmental impact (natural gas) and to a new technology (in the burners of the gas turbine).

The ROSEN plant started in July 1997, with an electrical power of 356 MW and a nominal production of steam of 410t/h, destined to Solvay.

The cogeneration covers the total thermic requirements (supply of steam) of Solvay’s plant of Rosignano. In the case of out service of one or both of the gas turbines, an emergency boiler guarantees the continuity of supply. Also, the electrical Rosen substation, being adjacent with Solvay, in case of problems with the national grid assures to Solvay a continuity of electrical supply guaranteeing security.

Economization of energy thanks to cogeneration

Heat and electricity are two forms of fundamental energy in industry, especially in chemical industries. For many chemical products the cost of energy represents a relevant part of the total cost.

Often heat and electricity are produced separately, or else in different installations. A boiler produces thermic energy, while electrical energy is taken from the national electrical grid

The cogeneration uses a revolutionary concept: in a single installation the production of heat is combined with the production of electricity. The principal objectives are those of economizing the fuel increasing the thermodynamic efficiency and reducing the atmospheric emissions.

For this reason, when you have a continuous need for electrical energy and of steam on an industrial site, cogenertaion is the correct answer. The Solvay plant in Rosignano satisfies this condition and the realization of a cogeneration permits us to convert 74% of fuel energy in the form of utility energy; which responds to an economy of 18% in respect to separate production.

Heat is supplied to the Solvay plant under the form of superheated steam at a high pressure (40 and 14 bars).
